National Board of Accreditation (NBA)

Overview

The Government of India has two accreditation agencies for higher education: National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The fundamental differences between the two bodies: NAAC evaluates the institution holistically against the prefixed quality parameters and gives accreditation; NBA evaluates the programme and gives accreditation. In simple sense, NAAC is for institution-based accreditation and NBA is for AICTE approved programme-based accreditation.

NBA operates on an online system of accreditation called "Accreditation Workflow Management System (AWMS)”. Washington Accord is an international agreement of equivalency recognition of UG engineering programmes of Tier I institutions. The following institutions fall under Tier I institutions: Universities, Deemed-to-be-Universities, University Departments and Autonomous Institutions imparting programmes in Engineering at UG level and have freedom to design, develop and update curricula and also have complete academic autonomy. NBA accreditation is internationally recognised.

The NBA accreditation has the following steps:

  • On-line registration
  • Submission of Self-Assessment Report (SAR)
  • Expert Team Visit
  • Evaluation of Expert Team’s Report
  • Final Decision of NBA.
